Ty Chandler’s Future with the Minnesota Vikings: What’s Next for the Running Back?

The Minnesota Vikings entered the 2024 offseason with a gap at running back, as key players like Aaron Jones and Cam Akers became free agents. Ty Chandler, the only significant running back remaining, was expected to step up. However, after several roster moves and the arrival of new talent, Chandler’s future in Minnesota has become uncertain. What happened to the promising second-year player, and what does his future with the Vikings hold?

The Vikings’ Changing Running Back Landscape

In the offseason, the Vikings made moves to strengthen their running back position. They re-signed Aaron Jones, who had a standout season in 2023, and traded for Jordan Mason, adding more depth to the team. With this shift, Chandler’s role has become less clear. While the Vikings seemed set to use him as a key player, the addition of experienced veterans raises questions about his place on the roster.

Jones’ Health and Chandler’s Decline

Aaron Jones’ health played a significant role in his performance last season. Despite suffering minor injuries, Jones managed to stay mostly healthy and set a career-high in rushing yards. However, his age and increasing mileage make it unlikely that he will continue to be as durable in 2024. That’s where Chandler’s potential could come into play, especially with Jones entering his twilight years. Still, Chandler’s opportunity to shine may be limited as the Vikings seek to balance the workload between their running backs.

In contrast to Jones’ success, Chandler’s 2023 season was far less impactful. As a second-year player, Chandler carried the ball 102 times for 461 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and scoring three touchdowns. He also caught 21 of 25 passes, showing versatility as a receiving back. However, in 2024, with Jones back and Akers providing competition, Chandler’s rush attempts were halved. He finished the season with just 56 carries for 182 yards, averaging only 3.3 yards per attempt.

A Promising Start, But a Diminished Role

The decline in Chandler’s usage last season was a significant setback. After showing promise as a rookie, it seemed like he would be a key contributor. However, the Vikings’ decision to bring back Jones and Akers, along with their other offseason moves, has left Chandler fighting for a spot in a crowded backfield.

In 2023, Chandler’s brief opportunities were often overshadowed by other running backs. With Jones and Akers both healthy and in the mix for more carries, Chandler’s role was reduced, causing his once-promising career to stall before it truly got off the ground.

New Competition: The Arrival of Tre Stewart

One of the most significant developments in the Vikings’ running back depth chart is the signing of undrafted free agent Tre Stewart. The Jacksonville State standout impressed scouts by turning 278 carries into 1,638 yards and scoring 25 touchdowns. His performance is comparable to some of the top draft picks from the 2024 class, making him a player to watch. Although it’s uncertain whether Stewart will challenge Chandler for a spot, the addition of another promising talent puts further pressure on Chandler to prove his worth.

Chandler’s position on the roster now looks less secure. While the Vikings did not draft a running back this season, Stewart’s impressive college stats suggest he could be a valuable asset, which might push Chandler further down the depth chart.

What’s Next for Ty Chandler?

As the 2024 season approaches, Ty Chandler’s future with the Minnesota Vikings remains unclear. With Aaron Jones and Cam Akers leading the backfield and new talent like Tre Stewart joining the mix, Chandler will need to step up if he wants to remain a part of the team’s plans. The competition for carries will be fierce, and Chandler will have to prove he can make a difference to secure his spot.

The Vikings’ strategy of spreading the workload among several running backs could offer Chandler an opportunity to contribute, but he will need to outshine his competition. His future in Minnesota largely depends on his ability to adapt and make the most of his chances in a highly competitive environment.
