George Russell has responded to rumours about Max Verstappen possibly joining Mercedes, calling the idea “totally understandable.” The Formula 1 world is buzzing with talks of Verstappen’s future, even though he remains under contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028.

Why Verstappen’s Future Is in Question

Verstappen’s future at Red Bull has become a hot topic in 2025. The team’s current car, the RB21, has not performed as expected. McLaren, one of Red Bull’s top rivals, currently holds a clear speed advantage. If Red Bull cannot improve, Verstappen may struggle to win his fifth consecutive drivers’ championship.

While Verstappen has been linked to both Aston Martin and Mercedes, the Mercedes option seems more realistic in the near term. Aston Martin has both drivers signed until the end of 2026. Meanwhile, Mercedes does not have firm contracts with either of its current drivers for next season.

Mercedes Driver Line-up Situation

Mercedes is in an interesting position. Kimi Antonelli, a young driver considered a long-term project for the team, is expected to stay. George Russell, who has started this season strongly, is reportedly close to signing a new two-year deal, with an option for a third year.

Russell, who took over the lead driver role after Lewis Hamilton’s exit, has performed well. He is confident in his place at Mercedes but understands why the team might want Verstappen.

“Why wouldn’t they want to sign Max? It’s totally understandable,” Russell told PA.
“He’s the best at the moment. He’s a four-time world champion. That’s not anything against me or Kimi. There are two drivers for every team, and he is one person.”

Russell emphasized that he is not worried about Verstappen joining the team.

“That doesn’t concern me one bit because the performance is my currency, and right now I think I am performing as good as anyone on this grid,” he added.

Russell’s Strong Start to the Season

Russell has had a great start to the 2025 season. In the first four races, he claimed three podium finishes. This strong performance has made him a dark horse in the championship race and given him confidence about his future.

“I am very happy,” Russell said.
“Many drivers have contracts, but the fact is that if you don’t perform, the teams will find a way to get you out of that. When the time is right, we’ll discuss a contract.”

He also spoke about his belief in himself and how he stays focused without stressing about future deals.

“I feel people who are too concerned about a lack of a contract or lack of clarity are those who don’t have the self-belief. I have got immense belief,” Russell explained.

Russell spent three seasons as a teammate to Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion. This experience, he says, has prepared him to take on any challenge.

“I believe I can beat anybody given the right chance, and that is your power,” Russell stated.

Verstappen’s Options Outside Red Bull

Although Verstappen is tied to Red Bull until 2028, this hasn’t stopped speculation. Red Bull’s recent car issues, combined with interest from rival teams, have led to talks about a potential switch.

Aston Martin may be a future option, but their driver line-up is fixed until 2026. This leaves Mercedes as a possible destination, especially if Verstappen looks for a fresh start in 2026 or sooner.

The current Mercedes line-up is still under review, with Russell nearly securing a new deal and Antonelli’s place looking safe. If Verstappen decides to leave Red Bull early, Mercedes would likely be ready.

What’s Next for Mercedes and Verstappen?

The 2025 Formula 1 season is just getting started. Red Bull is under pressure to improve the RB21, while Mercedes is building a stronger future after Hamilton’s departure.

Whether Verstappen will consider Mercedes depends on many things — team performance, car development, and contract talks. For now, Russell is focused on racing and making his case on the track.

As Formula 1 fans wait for more news, this story will continue to evolve throughout the season.
