Nissan Bets on Hybrid e-Power to Reverse Losses

Nissan, the Japanese automaker struggling with heavy losses, is focusing on its hybrid system called e-Power to help improve sales and recover financially. This technology combines an electric motor with a gasoline engine to provide a smooth, quiet driving experience without the need for external charging.

The e-Power system differs from traditional hybrids like the Toyota Prius because the gasoline engine only charges the battery while the wheels are powered by the electric motor at all times. This means the car always runs on electric power, making the ride quieter and smoother.

Nissan reported a loss of $4.5 billion for the fiscal year ending in March 2024. To turn things around, the company plans to cut costs by reducing its global workforce by about 15 percent, or around 20,000 jobs. Nissan will also cut the number of its factories from 17 to 10. The company is trying to adapt to new challenges, including higher tariffs in the United States, which have made sales more difficult for Japanese carmakers.

The e-Power technology is currently used on the Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail SUVs in Europe and on the Note hatchback in Japan. Nissan plans to introduce the upgraded system in the new Rogue model in the U.S. This system appeals to drivers who want an electric driving experience without worrying about plugging in to charge.

Nissan has been a pioneer in electric vehicles since launching the Leaf in 2010. The company is now developing more powerful electric models and working on solid-state battery technology. These new batteries could store more energy and charge faster than the lithium-ion batteries currently used in electric and hybrid cars.

Despite its efforts, Nissan faces financial pressure and may need a strong partner to survive. Talks with Honda about a business partnership ended without a deal earlier this year. There is speculation about the possible sale or repurposing of Nissan’s headquarters in Yokohama or some of its factories.

Nissan’s focus on e-Power technology shows its plan to stay competitive by blending electric power benefits with the convenience of gasoline refueling. This approach could help Nissan remain relevant as the automotive industry moves toward electric vehicles.
