Israeli forces have launched heavy airstrikes across Gaza, killing at least 125 Palestinians since early morning. Among the victims are 36 people in the al-Mawasi area, known as a so-called safe zone. The attacks come as Israel prepares for a possible new ground assault on Gaza while also engaging in ceasefire talks with Hamas in Qatar.
Since the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that over 53,000 Palestinians have died and more than 120,000 have been injured. The Government Media Office recently raised the death toll to over 61,700, including thousands believed trapped under rubble. On the Israeli side, at least 1,139 people have been killed and more than 200 remain captive following Hamas-led attacks.
The intensified Israeli bombardment is part of a broader military campaign aimed at Hamas, which controls Gaza. The mobilization of troops signals a potential ground offensive to target militant positions. Meanwhile, indirect ceasefire talks continue in Qatar, seeking to reduce violence and allow humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.
Arab leaders gathered in Baghdad have called for an immediate end to Israel’s offensive in Gaza and urged the international community to take action to deliver humanitarian assistance. Gaza’s humanitarian situation has worsened drastically with essential services like healthcare, water, and electricity severely disrupted. Hospitals are overwhelmed, facing shortages of supplies and high numbers of casualties.
The ongoing violence threatens to escalate further as Israel’s military build-up suggests a large-scale ground operation may be imminent. Diplomatic efforts in Qatar remain critical to achieving a ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian access for civilians in Gaza.
