U.S. tech firm Honeywell has teamed up with Argent LNG to explore using its natural gas pretreatment technology at a new LNG export terminal planned in Port Fourchon, Louisiana. The partnership was announced in April 2025 and is expected to support the growing demand for liquefied natural gas worldwide.
High-Tech Partnership Targets Cleaner LNG
Honeywell’s advanced LNG pretreatment systems are designed to clean natural gas before it’s cooled and liquefied. These systems remove harmful elements such as mercury, carbon dioxide, sulfur, water, and heavy hydrocarbons. This process makes the gas safe and ready for export while boosting efficiency at the plant.
The company’s technology includes three core components: a mercury removal unit (MRU), an acid gas removal unit (AGRU), and a SeparSIV unit. Together, these help prepare natural gas to meet strict international LNG standards.
Rajesh Gattupalli, president of Honeywell UOP, said the partnership will help strengthen energy security by supporting large-scale LNG production. “Honeywell’s LNG portfolio includes end-to-end solutions that can be customized and adapted based on the needs of our customers,” he explained.
Modular Design for Faster Delivery
One key feature of Honeywell’s offering is its modular design. Unlike traditional construction, modular LNG systems are built off-site and shipped to the plant. This approach can shorten project timelines and reduce construction risks, allowing faster entry into service.
This is especially important for Argent LNG, which aims to become a key supplier of LNG in a highly competitive market. By using modular solutions, the firm hopes to reduce costs and speed up the plant’s development.
Argent LNG Plans Major Output
Argent’s Port Fourchon plant is designed to produce up to 12 million tons of LNG per year (mtpa) in its first phase. In the second phase, production could increase to 25 mtpa, making it one of the largest export terminals globally.
From this location, Argent LNG plans to ship LNG to customers across Asia, Europe, South America, and the Middle East. Its position near major U.S. pipeline networks gives it easy access to domestic natural gas supplies.
Argent LNG CEO Jonathan Bass emphasized the importance of using proven technology. “Argent LNG is committed to delivering clean, secure, and cost-effective energy worldwide,” he said. “Honeywell’s proven technology has the potential to help us transform the United States LNG sector and help deliver the LNG the world needs.”
Demand for LNG on the Rise
According to the Shell LNG Outlook 2025, global LNG demand is expected to grow by 60% by 2040. This sharp rise is driven by the need for cleaner energy sources as countries shift away from coal and oil.
In this context, projects like Argent’s Louisiana terminal are vital. They help meet global energy needs while supporting the U.S. economy and job market.
Supporting Infrastructure and Global Deals
The upcoming Port Fourchon facility has already secured major partners. In February 2025, energy services giant Baker Hughes was selected to supply key systems, including gas compression and power generation equipment.
Additionally, Argent LNG has started to build a global customer base. In January 2025, the company signed a heads of agreement (HOA) with the Government of Bangladesh. Under this deal, Bangladesh could import up to 5 mtpa of LNG from the new plant once it becomes operational.
These developments underline Argent’s strategy of using strong partnerships to secure long-term success.
