Gaza’s Civilian Population Faces Widespread Displacement
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Israel has restricted access to large parts of Gaza. This includes no-go zones and forced displacement orders. As a result, tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes again, with few safe places left.
More than a month has passed since Israel announced a full blockade on March 2. Since then, no aid has entered Gaza. Prices of basic goods have soared. Food supplies are now nearly gone. All bakeries have shut down due to a lack of flour and fuel.
Hospitals Struggle Without Supplies Amid Ongoing Airstrikes
Hospitals in Gaza are overwhelmed. Many have run out of medicine and medical tools. This is due to the continued blockade, which violates international humanitarian law. Medical workers report they cannot treat injuries caused by Israeli airstrikes. Over 1,000 people have died in recent attacks, adding to a total death toll of more than 50,000 since the conflict began.
Humanitarian workers are also under attack. On March 23, 15 aid workers were killed in southern Gaza. This includes eight paramedics from the Palestinian Red Crescent. Their bodies were later found in a mass grave. These incidents highlight the high risks faced by those trying to help.
UN Report Details Targeting of Women and Children
A report published on March 13 by the UN Commission of Inquiry documents alarming trends. The report says that most women and children killed were inside homes. During the first month of fighting, 95% of women who died were with at least one child. Entire families have been wiped out in airstrikes.
One tragic case involved Hala Abd Al-Ati, an older woman shot while evacuating with her family. Video evidence shows her holding her grandson’s hand and waving a white flag. Despite posing no threat, she was shot by a sniper.
Another case involved a pregnant woman shot outside Al-Awda hospital in December 2023. Witnesses say Israeli troops were nearby but no one dared to help. She died from her wounds.
Reproductive Health Facilities Destroyed
The report also shows a deliberate impact on women’s health. Many maternity hospitals and clinics have been destroyed. Gaza’s main fertility clinic is among the buildings damaged. Experts warn that pregnant women, new mothers, and infants now face deadly risks. Access to care is nearly impossible.
The Commission states that sexual and gender-based violence is being used as a tool of war. These acts, it says, are intended to destabilize and harm Palestinian communities. Victims include women, girls, men, and boys.
Global Political Inaction Draws Criticism
Many countries have expressed concern, but few have taken real steps. While Ireland has supported stronger measures, like the Occupied Territories Bill, other nations have not followed. Calls for sanctions or arms bans have gone unanswered.
Human rights groups are urging world leaders to do more. They say the international community must push for a full ceasefire. They also want Israeli troops to withdraw from Gaza and the West Bank, as outlined in earlier ceasefire deals.
Urgent Need for Accountability and Humanitarian Aid
