EU and Japan Sign Quantum Technology Partnership to Boost Innovation

The European Union and Japan have signed a new agreement to work together on quantum technology. This cooperation was made official through a letter of intent focused on quantum science. The agreement is part of a broader partnership to advance next-generation technologies and improve global data security.

The new agreement sets up clear rules for joint research. These include shared project funding, combined research efforts, and synchronized proposal reviews. It also covers the protection of intellectual property and secure handling of cross-border data. Both sides aim to support fair and secure development of quantum technology.

A major project under this deal is Q-Neko, which involves 16 partners from the EU and Japan. This project will receive 4 million US dollars in funding from the European Union. Q-Neko’s main goal is to build strong quantum hardware, improve software systems, and combine quantum computing with high-performance computing. It also plans to use artificial intelligence to strengthen quantum applications.

Q-Neko researchers are focusing on how to apply quantum science in real life. They are working on new methods to improve biomedical research and materials science. Their research can also help in building better systems for earthquake and tsunami prediction. Other areas of focus include climate forecasting and machine learning supported by quantum computing.

This agreement is part of a larger technology plan between Japan and the EU. Besides quantum research, the plan covers joint efforts in semiconductor development and strengthening of supply chains. It also includes work on 6G mobile networks under the Mirai-Harmony project, secure digital identity systems, data protection rules, and cybersecurity.

Another important part of the deal is the agreement on undersea internet cables. The EU and Japan are now planning to create a new Arctic cable route. This route will improve digital connections between the two regions and make data transfers more secure. It also helps avoid risks linked to cables that pass through politically sensitive areas.

The partnership will be funded by Horizon Europe, the EU’s main research program, and Japan’s Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Program. These programs will provide money and technical support for joint projects. The agreement also includes strong protections for confidential data and intellectual property. Both sides have agreed to limit access by outside parties and apply strict security rules.

This step marks a new level of cooperation between Europe and Japan. As quantum technology grows, global partnerships like this are becoming more important. Countries are now working together to stay competitive and make faster progress.
