Craig J. Harris, an Emmy-winning producer, actor, and writer, has carved a unique path in the entertainment world. Based in the U.S., Harris left a decade-long career in IT to pursue his passion for storytelling. Today, his work has been featured on top networks like CNN, A&E, HGTV, Discovery, and Lifetime. In an exclusive conversation, Harris shared how personal moments, mentorship, and faith helped shape his Hollywood success.

From IT Office to Film Set: Harris’s Bold Career Shift

Craig J. Harris didn’t start in showbiz. For nearly 10 years, he worked in information technology. But one quiet moment changed everything.

“I stepped back… I heard this huge sigh,” he recalled. “It set off a chain of existential worry. I asked myself—what am I doing?”

This moment of reflection led to a life-changing decision. Harris told his wife he wanted to leave his job and follow his dream in the performing arts. “I felt the best way forward was to jump in with both feet,” he said.

Learning Every Role in the Industry

Once Harris made the leap, he embraced every opportunity he could find. He acted, did stunt work, voiced characters, and contributed to productions in any way possible.

“I like to be multifaceted,” Harris said. “It keeps me grounded. When I’m an executive producer, I understand the actor, the stunt person, the writer—because I’ve done all those jobs.”

That hands-on experience helped him grow in both skill and perspective. Today, his resume includes acting roles in hit shows like Empire, Prison Break, and Shameless.

Behind the Camera: The Power of Producing and Writing

Harris soon realized that the real creative power lies behind the camera. Shifting to producing and writing gave him more control over his stories.

“There are so many opportunities in production,” he explained. “If you’re behind the camera, you can create your own content—and even hire yourself.”

Harris wrote and produced acclaimed works like Chicagoland and the award-winning Skin Complex. His projects have earned him five Emmy Awards and four Telly Awards.

In 2020, he was also recognized on the Reel Chicago Black List, which highlights top African-American talents in film and TV.

Fitness, Focus, and Film: Preparing for Stunt Roles

Even when doing stunt work, Harris takes preparation seriously. He works closely with experts and maintains a strong focus on fitness and safety.

“I continue to learn from some of the best stunt men in the business,” he said. “It’s about staying in shape and being ready for any opportunity.”

This mindset—staying ready and adaptable—has been key to his long-term success.

Mentorship That Matters

Breaking into Hollywood can be tough. Finding a mentor is even tougher. Harris knows this first-hand.

“Only one person really invested in me,” he shared. “His name is Gary Sherman. I’m a television producer today because Gary took a chance on me.”

Now, Harris makes time to mentor rising talent. He believes in lifting others the same way he was lifted. “Whether you believe in God or not—what’s meant for you is yours. No one can take your blessings.”

Creative Roots and Family Support

Harris grew up in a home filled with music, books, and dreams. His family valued both education and imagination.

“Imagination ruled supreme in our household,” he said. That early environment gave him the courage to explore the arts and believe in his creative path.

A Reminder to Dream Big

Harris’s story shows that success in the entertainment industry isn’t about luck—it’s about passion, patience, and persistence. His journey from IT professional to award-winning producer is proof that it’s never too late to chase your dream.

For anyone considering a shift in their career—or a leap into the unknown—Harris has this message:

“Not everything is for you. But what is meant for you will find you.”
