Australia’s women’s cricket team is set to conclude their 2024/25 international season on a high as they take on New Zealand in a three-match T20I series. Stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath expressed her enthusiasm ahead of the first T20I, scheduled to take place in Auckland on Friday.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to lead the side again. I always enjoy working with Ash as vice-captain, and as a group, we’re just really excited to kick off what has been a long season for us and hopefully finish on a high with a series win over here in New Zealand,” McGrath stated during a press conference on Thursday.

Short T20I Series Amid World Cup Preparations

The Australian team finds itself in an unusual position with just three T20I matches at this stage of the season. Their primary focus remains on the upcoming 50-over World Cup, but McGrath believes this series is a valuable opportunity for the squad to refine their skills in the shortest format.

“It’s an odd one for us—just three T20s at this stage—with our focus being on a 50-over World Cup and also taking a bit of a break. But it’s also a really good opportunity for us, given that there aren’t many T20Is on the international schedule before the World Cup,” she said. “Every time we get to pull on the Australian shirt, it’s always a really good opportunity to go out there and keep getting better as a group.”

New Zealand Brings Full-Strength Squad

Australia anticipates a tough contest against a near full-strength New Zealand team, with the return of star players Sophie Devine, Amelia Kerr, and Lea Tahuhu. McGrath acknowledged the strength of the opposition and the challenge ahead.

“They’re pretty much back at full strength, New Zealand. We’re expecting a really hard-fought contest, hopefully with a nice crowd for the double-headers, and hopefully a few Aussies in the stands as well,” McGrath remarked. “They’ve got some world-class players—Devine, Kerr, Tahuhu—all back in the side, along with other superstars throughout their lineup. We’re going to have to be at our best and really looking forward to the challenge. Just can’t wait to get started tomorrow.”

Beth Mooney’s 200th International Match

The series opener on Friday will also mark a significant milestone for wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney, who will play her 200th international match. McGrath paid tribute to Mooney’s contributions and consistency in the team.

“It’s a crazy milestone for Moons. Two hundred games representing your country is a very special achievement. She’s the ultimate consistent performer,” McGrath said. “She gets us off to a brilliant start every time with the bat. She flies under the radar a bit, but she stepped up for us this year with the gloves and has played a really good role there. She’s a great team person, always looking out for her teammates. I’m really excited to take the field with her tomorrow and celebrate such a special milestone.”

Australia’s Strategy for the Series

Australia’s squad features a mix of experienced players and emerging talent. With the T20 World Cup approaching, this series will serve as an opportunity for players to solidify their spots and fine-tune their game plans. McGrath emphasized the importance of adapting quickly to the conditions in New Zealand and executing their strategies effectively.

“Our goal is to play aggressive, smart cricket while making the necessary adjustments to suit the conditions here. We know New Zealand will bring their A-game, so we have to ensure we’re at our best from the first ball,” she added.

With a strong lineup and a determined mindset, Australia will look to dominate the series and cap off their season on a positive note. Fans can expect a thrilling contest as both teams battle it out for supremacy in the T20I format.
